Light a candle in St Peter’s Basilica for a family member or loved one.
When you light a candle in St Peter’s Basilica, you can become part of our journey with your prayers! Every pilgrimage we have a special SPCP candle lighting ceremony.
We ask our travelers to help us light candles for those who cannot journey with us.
Fire and light have always been an important feature of worship in the Christian religion. The early Christians used candles as symbols in their holy places as a constant act of devotion and a symbol of a holy space where God dwells. This practice is most clearly seen being continued by the tabernacle in every church. The tabernacle, which is the Latin for ‘tent‘, is where the body and blood of Christ are kept between Masses. Just like in ancient times, a candle is kept perpetually burning beside it for the same reasons practiced back then; God is physically with us within the ‘tent’ and we wish to perpetually adore him.
In lighting a candle before a relic, statue or icon we are saying that God resides fully within that person, the person is in full communion with God and that that person is giving perpetual glory to God. Catholics practice this not to honour the image itself, but rather the one it truly represents. When we ask this saint to pray with and for us, this light, as it is kept burning, also shows our desire to remain in God’s presence as we go through our daily duties at home and in the workplace.
*Please leave a note in regards to your prayer intention. We will send you a photo to commemorate the candle lighting. We will have our chaplain give a special blessing to offer your prayers and light the candle. You will receive an email containing a photo of our annual candle lighting ceremony.
***St. Peter Claver Pilgrimages travels to Barcelona, Spain, and Rome, Italy every year. Visit historic holy sites and meet some new friends on this journey of a lifetime.
**We will light a candle for your prayer intention in St. Peter’s Basilica during our next pilgrimage. (*since our last pilgrimage, visitors are not permitted to light candle in St Peter’s Basilica. All candles will be light at St. John Lateran Basilica. It is the major basilica where the seat of the pope is located. You may not recognize it from the famous photos of the Vatican but St. John Lateran is the Catholic cathedral church of the Diocese of Rome. Think of it as your major church of the diocese you are located in. It serves as the seat of the bishop of Rome, the pope. We light all our candles in St John Lateran along with your prayer intentions.*)
